This mermaid’s celestial patron is the swift planet and deity, Mercury! Known as a trickster, Mercury is the astrological exception to every rule. Mercury belongs to neither the Night Sect nor the Day Sect and is neither a Malefic nor a Benefic by intrinsic nature. Instead, Mercury’s alignments depend on their position relative to the sun and their specific condition in each individual natal chart. Mercury rules over the rational intellect, communication, writing, reading, learning, calculation, hand-eye coordination, short-distance travel, technology, the sciences, words and numbers, mercantile endeavors, and data processing/distribution/comprehension/refinement. Mercury is quick and keen with their hands as well as their minds. According to The Picatrix, the most well-known of the ancient planetary grimoires, Mercury is “swift in all works, flitting from the things of one profession to those of another,” and represents those who possess “an agile mind [and are] apt to learn sciences,” as well as “those who labor in science and philosophy; understanding how things will happen; arithmeticians, geometers, astrologers, geomancers, magicians, augurs, scribes, grammarians, and smooth talkers.”

Mercury’s planetary day is Wednesday, and their duties are to deliver both the messages of the divine and mundane mind through speech and the written word, as well as preside over merchants, traders, tricksters, thieves, magicians, scientists, speakers, writers, and messengers.
